TTUHSC Abilene Launches Next Stop Nursing Camp to Address Healthcare Workforce Gaps

TTUHSC School of Nursing in Abilene ran its first-ever Next Stop Nursing Camp in June 2026, and 60 Big Country high school students showed up for a free day of hands-on healthcare training. Students worked through CPR, telehealth scenarios, neonatal assessments, disaster response, and nursing-themed escape rooms. Regional Dean Heather Guest designed the camp to address the healthcare workforce shortage facing Texas and to show local students how close a nursing career actually is. The TTUHSC Abilene program enrolls 75 students per semester and can be completed in 16 months post-prerequisites. About 25% of those students come from the Big Country and are more likely to stay and work here after graduation. Find out more about the program and the next camp at 1674 Pine Street in Abilene.

Abilene Heritage Square Transforms 1923 High School into Community Hub

The former Abilene High School just became one of the most useful buildings in the Big Country. Abilene Heritage Square opened in May 2026 after nearly 20 years of planning, bringing the city a free public library, a hands-on science center, a makerspace, a recording studio, and a rentable event space inside a restored 1923 landmark. The $80 million project was funded entirely through private giving, with no tax dollars attached. The Abilene Public Library main branch opens free every Monday through Saturday at 9 a.m. The Spark Science Center runs Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on a ticketed basis. Plan your visit to Heritage Square at 1699 S. 1st St. and see what your neighbors built.
